Algae Garden
2000
Smell sculpture

‘Algae Garden’ comprises 150 tampons that are installed of five rotating rings.

Each tampon is impregnated with a different fragrance.
Some are natural flowers, others artificial fruits,
with each one built out of the fragrances of rare flower species.

In this olfactory sculpture Maciá examines the contradictions between olfactory and visual information in a re-evaluation of preconceptions about objects, smells, place and memory.

It demands that menstruation be celebrated culturally instead of being a hidden phenomenon
