Olfactory-acoustic scenario
'Anestesia' comprises notations of charcoal on black paper,
spherical nests covered with smell-infused wax
and sound-textures of bees communicating through vibration,
collected in island of Santo Antão, Cabo Verde, the Rolvsøy Norwegian Arctic,
Istanbul Turkey and Cartagena de Indias.
Together they create an intense sensorium. This scenario examines the etymology of the word aesthetic. This term refers to the accepted principles of art and the idea of pleasure
through beauty, derived from the Greek aisthetikê (sensation or perception)
and aisthesis (sensitivity, or perception via the senses). The word was appropriated by the philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762) to define the science of the beautiful. After Baumgarten aesthetic has been erroneously reduced to a single sense: vision.
Demanding perception from all of the senses,
Maciá’s 'Anestesia' presents itself as the opposite of what its title proposes.
