Sound sculpture

Maciá responds in this sculpture to the difficulty of sifting out knowledge from the excess of information that is constantly surrounding us, showing how uninformed we are to familiar sounds. ‘Something going on above my head' is a symphony of 2,000 birdcalls sourced from international ornithological archives and audio libraries. Five hundred calls from four continents are drawn together into a symphonic narrative playing through eight sound-channels over a half hour cycle. We humans often think of the sounds of birds as songs for our pleasure - our arrogance misguides our understanding. Each is an alarm call, communicating distress, defence or procreation. Maciá asks that we take the time to listen as well as to hear.
